Why I Turned Off My Mobile Phone | No More Phone Prospecting!
I made a decision to end my life of phone prospecting by making the ultimate decision of turning of my mobile phone…..permanently! GASP! Now I now it sounds crazy and it’s possible that you simply can’t walk away from your phone in the same manner that I have because of family and business needs (perceived), but I will lay out my case on how you can actually thrive without a phone in ways you may not even be aware of. There’s a better way to truly create FREEDOM in you life without bugging people on the phone (or them bugging you) and I’ll share that with you at the end of this blog post.
Calling People Sucks, So Stop Phone Prospecting!
Raise your hand if you made 200-300 calls a day, caught 90%+ voicemails, got 10% of them on the phone and spent days and weeks following up and chasing those leads for your business. I have and it sucks! This is what your life looks like when you embrace phone prospecting. You become a telemarketer……and no one likes a telemarketer and they certainly don’t want to be one. Screw that!

Now, my decision to stop phone prospecting and turn off my phone was a long time coming. It was actually, a real difficult decision. Like many people, I just love my iPhone, all of the cool apps, the modern conveniences, being instantly connected to the world and having endless information at my finger tips.
Plus, there’s the practicality of having a phone immediately available. Things comes up, plans change and emergencies happen. But beyond that, when it comes to building and scaling a business online, there’s something underneath the surface that is affecting your productivity.
Actually, there’s two things:
- Talking to unqualified prospects. There are people you will speak to each and every day with phone prospecting that are not the type of people you should not do business with. This is a waste of your valuable time.
- Managing your team. Getting on the phone with your team is actually costing you money more often than it is making you money. Every time you are on the phone with them, training, coaching, comforting, doing 3-way calls, talking shop, gossiping, complaining, doing busy work or planning the meeting before the meeting you are losing time on building your business by marketing & promoting.
Now before you flip out, let just say that there is definitely value in building relationships and offering coaching to your team. What I am saying is there’s better ways to do it that doesn’t require you being on the phone with them all day long.
The bigger your team, the more important and true this becomes. It simply becomes impossible to scale your business AND create true freedom in your life with phone prospecting and having your business tied to you personally being on the phone with your organization and their prospects on a daily basis.
Do Not Teach Your Team Phone Prospecting!
Let’s just call out the elephant in the room and cut the crap. Cold calling and phone prospecting is a bunch of bullshit most people don’t want to do. I mean, seriously, think about it. If you are in a home-based business, one of the first things you are told is to make a list of friends, family and any contact you may have that might know your face and name.
Why do these companies and leaders tell you to do this? Well, for those that can muster up the strength to do phone prospecting and face the fear of rejection, you can produce some results. Just enough results for you to teach someone else to do the same thing. And so the dream continues, you get two and they get two and they get two and BAM!…..you’re RICH!
Except one thing…..that NEVER HAPPENS!

The first thing you can do is use an Internet marketing system and sales funnel that will guide your prospects and leads through the sales process with complete automation. You won’t need to be there, you won’t need to speak with them, you won’t need fancy scripts and closing techniques and you certainly won’t need to do any phone prospecting. The second thing you can do is train your team from the very beginning to do the very same thing as you in regards to phone prospecting. But you need to take it one step further: point them to the training tools and systems that are in place rather than getting on the phone and teaching them yourself. Your new team members need to become self-sufficient. They need to be able to operate and find solutions. If they need you for everything, you are actually sabotaging their success because they are now totally reliant on you for answers. Nine times out of ten, the answer to their questions are available in the training or in a Google/YouTube search. This is the modern information age, there’s no excuse.
Third, only get on the phone with members of your team who are truly committed and serious about building the business. Did they buy all the products? Did they go through the training? Did they invest time or money into their marketing? Are they actively participating in team activities, conference calls and webinars? Are they truly taking the actions to reach the next level?
It THESE people who are worthy of your valuable time and you should invest in THEM! Love them. Honor them. Coach them. These are your true business partners. These are the people you will see at major events. These are the ones you will want to spend your vacations and party with. These are the people that GET IT!
Everyone else, point them to the training and tools. When they are sick & tired or being sick & tired, they will rise up and join the rest of your inner circle. You can call them when they have shown that they are ready and have earned your very valuable time.
