Having been born in a home with a mother that followed the orthodox Indian culture, I was exposed to Yoga from childhood. I was truly fascinated at how people could bend their bodies. It seemed they were squeezing their lives out!

I loved reading and came across a book with yoga pictures when I was about 10 years old. The fascination to attempt those postures got the better of me and I decided to read the instructions contained in it.

The instructions of course warned not to try any advanced or difficult postures without an instructor. This was the biggest joke for me at the time because I knew for a fact that even if I had an instructor, I would never be able to do those things!

Anyway the way I learned yoga was through pictures. The written instructions were just gibberish to me because they spoke of so many benefits that it seemed totally unbelievable. And they do make some pretty hefty claims.

I practiced the postures in the pictures as a hobby at first and then it started to get easier to do the more difficult ones. Eventually, in about 3 years, I was reasonable proficient in them. I was invited by the local Yoga school to attend their classes & of course I was better than the instructor himself. So before long, I was instructing the class as well. Through regular instruction from the age of about 15, I was forced to be regular & proficient in Yoga.

So lets get to the point. What are the real benefits:
1. Yoga exercises your internal organs, stretches your muscles & makes you more flexible, especially in your spinal column.
2. The act of regularly exercising these neglected aspects makes an immediate benefit of feeling more flexible & light in your body. You feel as free as a child, so to speak. To run, hop, skip & jump.
3. Your regular exercise of the internal organs is by virtue of squeezing or pressing it when you indirectly apply pressure to it by holding certain postures. Depending which posture, you tone a different organ or muscle. This of course makes the organ healthier. This is probably how I managed to overcome a 10 year Diabetes problem due to the inherent advantage I had within the organs itself.
4. I am now 43 years old. I feel young as ever and have not lost any flexibility, strength or endurance Yet! I can still compete with teenagers and may probably beat many of them up a flight of 12 floors of stairs.

The bottom line: You will look & feel younger. You will have more energy. You will be healthier. You will have a better chance of coping with any current chronic ailments and some of you may even overcome them.

The best thing you can do is to find a Yoga class somewhere and attend for the physical benefit. The problem with attending most of these classes is that the instructors try to indoctrinate you into Hinduism. This is your choice of course but for those of you who do not wish to change your current religion, just focus on the physical aspects of it. Once you get proficient, you can practice it alone, if you have the discipline of course!

For the rest of you (I think 99%), who want some general set of pictures to follow and try on your own without having to go through all the effort & expense, you can do the following as my suggestion:

I have a picture that contains all the basic as well as absurd postures. You can Download it by going to this web address. Just copy & paste it into your browser: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/114387912923196205245/albums/5730094477987073425

Then you will find a sequence called SuryaNamaskaras in the middle of the pictures. It has a numbered sequence of 12 postures. You will note that number 1 & number 2 is repeated as well as number 11 & number 12. So just follow this sequence one after the other until you come to number 12 again. This is one set. Repeat this sequence 12 times. Means do this 12 postures as a sequence over and over 12 times. This is your first step always!

After the completion of the above repetition of the sequence of 12 postures, lie down flat on your back & relax until you feel totally relaxed and regained your breath.

Thereafter you can try the other postures that are easy for you. The rule is to try to hold each posture for a few seconds at least or as long as is comfortable. Repeat 3 to 5 times.

After each posture, after you have completed it 3 to 5 times & before going to the next posture, relax again lying flat on your back until you are totally relaxed & regained your breath.

It is in the time of relaxation that the flow & regulation of blood supply benefits the organs. So this is the most important part of Yoga.

Lastly, don’t get disappointed if they all seem difficult. With time you will gain flexibility. Keep trying. Add Yoga to your exercise schedule. The best is to alternate the days of your usual exercise schedule with Yoga in between. The least you should practice yoga is once a week and try to do it 3 times a week if possible.

Yoga should not be considered as an alternative to regular exercise. You MUST do cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training exercises. But do the regular exercise on a different day. Do not do them together at the same exercise session!

Please write your comments on this topic below. I would really love to know what you think.
