Solo Ads Tutorial: The Secret Life of Solo Ads
by niamharthur | on January 30, 2012
Using Solo Ads is the most cost effective way to start your internet marketing with a BANG.
You don’t need a lot of money to get started, you don’t need to already have a list… and you don’t even really need to know what you’re doing, lol.
First off…the quick “solo ads” definition: You pay someone to send an email to their list promoting your website (usually a capture page offering something free in exchange for the persons email address… you can see my best converting example here.)
Here’s what you do need for success with your Solo Ads:
1. An Autoresponder service (such as Aweber).
2. A capture page ( these can be simple Aweber capture forms hosted by aweber, but creating your own capture page will probably yeild better results)
3. A compelling offer ( your freebie product).
That’s it.
If you have just these three things in place you can get started list building with solo ads.
But this article is called “The Secret Life of Solo Ads” so where is the secret?
Well, not all Solo ads are created equal. And there are some easy traps to fall into when you are just getting started with them. It’s important to make sure that you aren’t wasting your money or getting taken advantage of!
In Solo Ads you are typically paying for an agreed number of clicks. This means you and the seller will agree on how many people they will be sending to your website. You are then in charge of the conversions. Don’t forget, you need to be focused 100% on getting the most CONVERSIONS not the most clicks!
What gets high conversions in Solo Ads?
1. Specific copy.
Don’t forget people who sell solo ads don’t care how many people opt in to your offer. All they are trying to do is get the right number of clicks. Most will even try to over deliver on the clicks. But what gets the most clicks does not get the most conversions
For example, one of my solo ads was sent out with only the text “Free Gift” explaining what people were clicking on… so I got lots of clicks, but only a 25% opt-in rate. Whereas in a different one of my solo ads the sender actually put “click here for Rebel Marketers Manual” and I got a whopping 55% opt-in rate.
The different was, a curiousity click is someone who wants to see the page and what the mysterious free gift is…whereas a specific click is someone who has already decided they want the Rebel Marketers Manual and opt-in practically as soon as they hit the page.
Most solo sellers prefer to write their own copy, but it’s worth asking them for a preview of the copy and agreeing ahead of time what they will send out.
2. Genuinely SOLO
You really want your link to be the ONLY featured link in the senders email. It should be very clear to people that this is endorsed by the sender, and several links to several offers only muddies the message.
Not all sellers guarantee this, so before purchasing solo ads it’s often a good idea to get on the sellers list and see what kind of emails you get. If the emails list five different free gifts, you probably don’t want to buy a solo from them (as these are most likely five people who bought solo ads thinking it would be going out SOLO).
3. Reviews
The best way to buy solo ads is by reading reviews from other purchasers. This method of advertising does rely on some level of trust, so you need to know in advance what kind of traffic you are getting and if other people have had good results from the sellers.
Here is one source of reviews:
Reed Floren’s Solo Ad Directory
However, this is just one person’s experience with the solo ads sellers, and depending on his opt-in offer it may not reflect the experience of others. I did start out only buying from sellers on Reed Floren’s list until I discovered Safe Swaps:
With a free safe swaps account you can see all the reputable solo ads sellers and ongoing ratings that are from verified purchasers of their ads. You can also see how many clicks they have been sending and whether or not the purchasers were happy with the solo.
Remember, you should ALWAYS email the solo ads seller ahead of time to agree on good SPECIFIC ad copy, make sure it will be sent out SOLO and read reviews of anyone you want to purchase a solo ad from.
