Target Marketing Basics

Target MarketingTarget marketing involves the breaking up of any master market into smaller segments and then focusing on meeting requirements of customers in that particular area or areas. Target marketing can also be called niche marketing. They are a very successful marketing model for new entrepreneurs and small businesses. The advantages of target marketing include the cost effective pricing and distribution options. All the big company names that you hear like Walmart and Ebay and Amazon did not start their businesses this big. Everyone starts off with a smaller target market and builds up a strong and supportive customer base. When they have excelled in target marketing a single product, then they venture into other niche markets and eventually grow as big as they are now.

Target Marketing: Identifying Your Market

The process of identifying the target market and trying to narrow down the focus to a single smaller market is sometimes not welcomed by people in the company. But if you try to cover everything and offer everything to everyone, then you will most probably fail. In target marketing, you should know about how your customers will be and what they will by. Many times, I come across people who have started out business in some target market and have just assumed that everyone needs their products or services. Making assumptions is wrong as it misleads you. It forces you to make wrong decisions and follow wrong strategies and plans.

The successful bunch of businesses always has done their homework. They know what their niche market requirement is and how to go about target marketing them. They know and understand that only a limited number of people will be requiring their business. Then these businesses give their complete attention to targeting only those people and making sure not to lose them to the competition. You too can follow this simple pattern of target marketing and find success. You don’t need to run behind everything the market has to offer. Learn to become the specialist in any field!

Target Marketing: Determine Your Niche

Your marketing strategy can be determined by analyzing what type of product you are selling. People buy things for three basic reasons.

  • a. They need them i.e. they are basic needs
  • b. To solve some problem i.e. a tool
  • c. To make them feel good about themselves i.e. any beautifying /grooming product

You have to decide which category your product falls in and then market accordingly. Then you need to use market segmentation techniques for target marketing your product or service. You need to verify whether your target audience is local or international. Then you will have to research on the demographics accordingly. This means that once you have decided if your customers are local or international, you need to divide them into smaller groups based on country, city, race, age group, gender, marital status, education, etc. you choose the demographics that match with the requirements of your service.

Once you are done with demographics, next you will need to segment the market through psycho-graphics. This means division by interests, lifestyles, beliefs, and attitudes etc. by this time in your research you will have a pretty good idea of where you are heading with your target marketing business.

Target MarketingTarget Marketing: Making Them Recognize You

Many times because of the lack of proper advertisement and marketing strategies, your customers do not recognize you. They don’t know your identity or they mistake you for someone else. Once you know your niche market, expose yourself and present yourself as a brand and a leader. People want to see authoritative figures and like doing business with them. It’s your responsibility to make yourself stand out from among your competitors.

Your business name holds a very important place in target marketing as well. Experts believe that the name should reflect what the businesses about. When people use their own personal name, then customers don’t have anything to do with it. Unless you are a superstar, you should not use personal names for naming businesses. The slogan you choose should also reflect that you mean business. People should take you seriously and not like just some other person opening a new business.

Target Marketing: Learning the Science

In target marketing the skills you use and the tips you use should focus on our specializations. This increases the credibility. You need to be shown as you are the expert in at least something. Once that is established, you further improve business by target marketing over the internet through social media, blog, articles and forums. This keeps you in communication with the customers and you know what they need and what they don’t need. Engaging customers in a two way conversation is actually what target marketing is all about.

Target marketing is not an exact science and often times you do not know what the response may be. It will require a certain amount of experiments to determine the right approach to market your business or product. In the experimental phase, it is important to keep records of all research and results. Maintaining a proper database can help you analyze where you lack in skills and what approach is getting you customers better.

The need for target marketing for smaller businesses is very simple. Entrepreneurs do not have the time, experience or money. To save resources and to reduce the risk, you need to present your product to people that are most likely to buy it rather than waste your time marketing your product to the whole world. The rule is very simple. No matter how incredible and perfect your marketing strategy is; if the person you are selling to is not the least bit interested, your product will not sale. Try visualizing the scenario of playing classical music in a rock concert. What outcome do you expect? That’s what going to happen if you don’t target the market properly.

Target Marketing: ConclusionTarget Market

Target marketing helps you in maximizing the sales and earning a substantial income. It requires minimal resources and risks. It is majorly successful if you have done the research correctly and if you succeed you can venture into other niche markets and then someday combine all the niche markets to form your own mega market.
