Business Intelligence (BI): for Resilience Building in any business –
Definition of BI…”is the ability of an ‘any’ organization or business to reason, plan, predict, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend, innovate, and learn in ways that increase organizational knowledge, inform decision processes, enable effective actions, and help establish business goals.” (Wells, D. 2008)

Business Intelligence activities are wide and varied dependent on organisational needs and the framework within which they operate.

These business intelligence activities are carried out with a view to strengthen the organisations ability to conduct its business operation with minimal disruptions and to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster or incident.

In this topic we will be looking at the business intelligence activities and issues that are important to any company (x) in terms of building a robust and resilient organisation. Business intelligence activities and issues can be broken down along organisational structure layouts to determine their relative importance and interconnectedness in a view to build preparedness into the companies’ culture.

Business Intelligence for Home Based Busineses and Small-Medium Enterprises (SME’s)

As one of the many Small-Medium Enterprise (SME) in a highly saturated and extremely competitive home based business sector, company x, needs to consider the main drivers within their structure that define what it needs and what it aims to achieve with its’ business intelligence.

These Small-Medium Enterprise (SME)/ Home Based Business structures should aim at building and contributing to organisational resilience through, as noted in:

  • “Effective organisational design requires the skilful application of internal division of work, internal control and coordination and management of relations with external environment.
  • Effectiveness depends on the fit between organisation’s parts and processes that structural designs determines.
  • What needs to be done (the task) and how it gets done (the process) can be facilitated or hindered, depending on the structure of this interaction.” (Simcha Ronen, 1986).
  • Many would be entrepreneurs in SME’s and Home Based Businesses should aspire emulate structure of prominence as espoused by:

    Business Intelligence on the internal aspects has to be well in areas that will bring about the desirable outcome in respect to:

  • improved performance,
  • operational efficiency,
  • profitability and
  • market penetration.
  • Conversely, the business intelligence external drivers will be more geared towards attaining compliance with the new direct sales self-regulatory bodies (Direct Sales Associations), the better business bureau on issues such as ethos, integrity and honesty and other governing agencies on issues such as disclaimers, privacy, taxation issues.

    Business intelligence within the resilience building context bring about a behavioural synergy that would emerge as a result of “assembling ongoing interdependent actions into sensible sequences that generate sensible outcomes” (Weick, 1979, p30).

    The basic Entrepreneurial structures in SME’s and Home Based Businesses are typically based on silos, top-down managerial directives covering the core business competence vis-à-vis financial and human resources, marketing and operations.

    Primarily desktop intelligence is the crucible of all the departments. All the planning and direction of its activities emanates from here. Various types of data are collected in the respective areas and processed to give meaning to the intelligence, which is then analysed and demystified for dissemination to the front lines for implementations.
