How Does Twitter Make Money?

This is a question I get asked a-lot, I have no idea why – but for some reason people see me and think “Hey, Jeff looks like a twitter guy – I’ll ask HIM”

Well, a little background first on twitter - according to Wikipedia:

It (twitter) was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million registered users as of 2012, generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. Since its launch, Twitter has become one of the ten most visited websites on the Internet, and has been described as “the SMS of the Internet.” Unregistered users can read tweets, while registered users can post tweets through the website interface, SMS, or a range of apps for mobile devices.

So, how DOES Twitter Make Money?

Twitter makes money via a few methods actually.

Promoted Tweets

One way Twitter makes their money is via “promoted tweets”.  In April of 2010 – Twitter publicly announced plans to offer companies an option of ‘paid advertising’, where they could purchase “promoted tweets” (much like you see facebook’s promoted posts) to appear in relevant search results on twitters website.  This obviously worked well, as Twitter quickly signed on Sony, Best Buy, Red Bull and even starbucks almost immediately.

Have you ever noticed the “Trending” tweets portion of the twitter sidebar?  The TOP tweet will always have a promotional symbol next to it – believe it or not, businesses/individuals pay BIG money to have their tweets placed here due to the HUGE visibility & potential followers & lead generation they can receive.

Have you ever noticed the “who to follow” feed on your sidebar in twitter?  Take a closer look, you’ll often notice the TOP one that is recommended you follow is also a promoted account.  Now businesses, Celebrities, Foundations etc, are able to pay to get YOU to notice their account, and of course follow them as well.

Enhanced Profiles

Another clever money making idea for twitter is their ‘Enhanced Profile” feature, which currently costs a few thousand dollars.  Users/Businesses who ‘opt’ for this feature have the privileges to feature their own logo, use any other form of visual branding on the page, list promoted tweets at the top, share tweets with images, AND video links displayed conspicuously.  This is still pretty new, so it’s yet to be seen how effective this will be as a revenue generator for twitter.

Verified Profiles

Believe it or not, Celebrities – or simply people who want to CONTROL the name of their own twitter account can pay a small sum of $15,000 to ‘verify’ their twitter accounts officially with twitter.  While this is not their largest source of income, I would imagine it does pay a few bills!
