Carbon Tax

Will having a carbon tax really help the country or just help the government raise additional revenue?

I am still yet to be convinced that taxing the top polluters in Australia will actually reduce our carbon footprint or even encourage them to change their practices. The only thing I am convinced of is that these companies will have a greater impost on doing business and that impost will be passed directly onto the consumer. It will mean greater electricity charges, greater transport costs, greater costs for petrol, all I see is the cost of living going up and up and up.

I would think we should be putting programs in place to make all polluters not just the big ones change their polluting practices. To the credit of the government they have put programs in place to give rebates for getting solar systems or insulting their homes but these programs have either been withdrawn, mishandled, to being phased out. Has this made people and companies change their practices? I don’t really think so!

Carbon Tax or change of practices?

These are tough times for the planet and for climate change, if you believe in this, and it needs governments to make bold decisions rather than just something that seems popular. Each individual government around the globe needs to act for the benefit of their people not to be swayed by what other countries are doing or not doing. They need to set short term targets and stick to them. For example make coal powered electricity illegal within 5 years, rather than just charge these companies for their pollution. If companies know they have to change because their current practices will be illegal in a certain time period they will either cease to operate or change, but charging a carbon tax does not directly encourage them to change, just pass it onto the consumer.

I have heard plenty of times that if the governments of the world spent just 1% of their defence budgets we could remove poverty around the globe, I am sure if we spend another 1% we could come up with sustainable solutions to remove pollution from the globe.

The problem is most governments are voted in through a popularity contest and although many politicians might get into politics for the right ideological reason, at the end of the day to keep their job they need to remain popular. I think it is time for people and politicians to stand up and do what is right for our planet and make a real difference for generations to come.

I know I would rather be remembered as someone who took as stance rather than just let things go along as they are.

Do we really need a Carbon Tax? I would be really interested to know your views.

Yours in Success,

Dean Howell
