Being Your Own Boss . . . One Day at a Time
Ahhhhhh, it’s what so many employees dream of as they drag themselves to work every day . . . being your own boss. I know I sure do.
“If I were boss . . .” you hear around the water cooler as employees rapidly recount how life would change, if only he/she were boss. (I’m picturing the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man in the “Wizard of Oz” as they sing ”If I only had . . .”
And so, this great journey of being your own boss begins with that single thought of If Only I Could Be My Own Boss . . . then . . .
But the thing is, most of us have been an employee for all of our lives – and it takes some undoing of the mindset to shift to the being your own boss mentality in order to successfully build your business.
Actually, it’s kind of scary even though this a dream come true – something most desired. Now, all of a sudden, there is no one to tell you what to work on, what project has to be done today . . . you are in complete control of the development and outcome.
You quickly come to realize the down and dirty side of being your own boss: you are the all-in-all – the CEO, the CFO, the Marketer, the Salesman, the Social Media Consultant, the Project Manager, the videographer, the blogger, the graphic designer – and you take a deep breath and wonder, can I really take responsibility for ALL of this?
It’s generally fun and easy to visualize the big picture of being your own boss – seeing the end result: lots of leads, tons of sales and dollars in your bank account. But, getting there isn’t quite so easy to picture without becoming totally overwhelmed.
Dave Wood of Empower Network recently shared an interview he conducted with Empower Network team member Justin Verrengia to find out what Justin was doing to achieve the success he was experiencing with Empower Network and other internet marketing business ventures. There was much excitement in the conversation between the mentor and the student as they discussed how to expand Justin’s results to reach a new level of income.
The most vital tip I received from listening to this interview was to focus on what needs to happen right now – TODAY.
Dave taught that instead of fragmenting your focus, the thing that is most crucial at the beginning is to focus all your energy on what you need to do right now to move one step forward in your business.
For me, it was like I was tossed a life preserver just when I was about to drown in overwhelm. I had been trying to swim with the big boys, but losing steam.
It helped clear the paralysis I had developed from adopting “if I can’t do it all, I can’t do anything” mentality.
Ever hear the question: How do you eat an elephant? . . . ONE BITE AT A TIME! How to you become a successful internet marketer? . . . ONE DAY AT A TIME.
Being your own boss is alluring and exciting, especially when you see evidence of others who are having tremendous success in their business.
Being patient and taking it one day at a time is difficult because we want to be where those successful people are – RIGHT NOW!
It’s funny how many times the words of wisdom imparted to my children, come back to me at full throttle to get my attention. Many many times I told my tearful teenage daughters, “there is always someone who is skinnier than you, or who can dance better than you, or who gets better grades than you. But, there’s also always someone who weighs more than you, who can’t dance, who suffers with poor grades.”
Well, guess what! It’s no different when you are on your way to being your own boss. There are those ahead who have reached the highest levels of success, but there are also those behind who are just beginning the journey. Everyone is paving the way on the path to being your own boss.
No matter where you are on this journey to being your own boss, a helping hand is always appreciated . . . right? Bruce and I are here, hands extended to share our story and help you get moving on yours. Join us on Empower Network!
