Are You Unknowingly Sabotaging Your Goals?

I was watching a popular cable TV show the other night – American Pickers – and I clearly saw how one could forget their original goal and unknowingly halt their forward movement towards it.
American Pickers is a reality show that features two down home friendly guys who make a living buying just about anything “old” and reselling their finds to collectors. They negotiate to buy as cheaply as possible so that they can sell at “retail” price, thereby making a profit.
A gentleman that had been collecting *junk* since he was ten years old called the guys at American Pickers and invited them out to his storage areas so they could “pick through it” to find the type of items they could resell to others. This guy’s goal was to clear out a lot of the junk to make more living space for his two small grandkids who were moving in with him.
His GOAL: To clear out a bunch of old stuff collecting dust.
His VISION: More living and playing space for his two little grandchildren.
As the pickers went through the pick, sort, and negotiate process with this proud grandpa, it became pretty clear that this guy was just not emotionally ready to let go of any items in his years-big collection.
Frank, one of the pickers pair, picked up a picture of the grandchildren, held it in front of Grandpa’s face, and told him to REMEMBER HIS GOAL AND VISION, to remember WHY and FOR WHOM he was selling some of this stuff.
BINGO. All of a sudden Grandpa was ready to start letting go of his attachments and move forward with his goals to create his vision of more living and play space for his grandboys.
Items were picked, prices were negotiated, sales were finally made… and everyone got what they wanted.
Think about it…
Are you sabotaging your efforts in some area of your life without knowing it?
Remember your vision.
Remember the goals you made to create that vision.
Get yourself out of your own way, put one foot in front of the other and take the next step.
