Simple Tips and Techniques to Make Green Energy Work for You

by | on March 26, 2012

Caring for the Earth is the responsibility of every single one of us. There are lots of alternative, eco-friendly energy sources you can use, such as solar or wind energy. How can these technologies be put to work for you? Read more to find out.

Making small adjustments to the way you use energy every day can ultimately reduce your consumption. When not using a certain appliance, unplug it from the outlet. Turn off lights and other electronics in a room when you leave. This is an excellent way of saving yourself some money.

You can shave a significant amount from your utility bills by installing a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can be pre-programmed and regulate the temperatures in the home throughout the year. You are also able to program these thermostats to regulate day and night hours temperatures.

Close the curtains or blinds before you leave the house. This keeps the interior of your home cooler or warmer, depending on the season, and reduces your energy bill. Typically, the south facing windows are the ones that get the most amount of sun due to their location. Try adding window coverings that block heat, such as shades or darker, lined curtains.

Are you the owner of a farm? If so, you can rent some property to energy companies for installing wind turbines. You and those around you can benefit from the free energy. A turbine doesn’t take up much space, either.

Look for skilled professionals to do your work. Before you decide to spend your money on an alternative energy system, do your homework and learn as much as you can about it, and determine if you will actually be saving money with it. If a salesman that is promoting a product seems a bit overeager to sell, make them provide strong evidence that their product works.

Consider installing a solar water heating system. If you live where freezing temperatures aren’t prevalent, you can purchase a system that can circulate water via a solar heater prior to being pumped to your home. You should still retain traditional water heaters for backup when the sun doesn’t show, or if you use a lot of heated water.

Use cold water in your washing machine. Almost 90% of energy consumption during clothes being washed is a result of the hot water usage. As long as your detergent is good, cold water washing can be just as effective as warm water. Don’t forget to wait until you have a full load of laundry to wash; that is the energy efficient way.

Check your refrigerator seals to avoid wasted energy. A damaged seal will cause your fridge to use more energy than necessary, wasting both energy and money. To determine whether or not the seal needs to be replaced, close a piece of paper in the door and ensure that it doesn’t slide out too easily.

When you calculate the solar panel needs of your home, figure out the hours of sun you get in the winter. This will prevent any unpleasant surprises during the winter months, while leaving you safely ahead of your needs during the summer. However, you should also include any refunds you will get from your utility company for excess energy generated in summer!

If you are trying to achieve a greener lifestyle, there are many options for you. While you might not have much money to spend on going green, you can begin by cleaning up furnace filters every month and set the heat to 60 degrees when you aren’t home. You can also help reduce energy usage by reducing the temperature of your water heater to 120 degrees. Every small change helps!

Electric heaters are an energy hog and should be avoided as much as possible in the winter. They are not environmentally friendly. Instead, start wearing warmer clothing indoors and use a pellet stove or fireplace to keep main living areas heated. Remember, cooler air during sleep is better for breathing, and keeps the airways from drying out.

It is absolutely essential that we reduce our dependence on coal and oil and switch to greener energy sources. All power sources impact our environment in some way, but with green energy, the impact is minimized. After reading this article, you are now aware of how to incorporate green energy into your life.

Have an empowering day!
