Self employment ideas are a dime a dozen. And with the new year being just 4 days away I know people are making New Year’s resolutions to get their life on “track” so they can start reaching their goals and dreams.

I really commend those that are wanting to venture out on their own and take a leap into entrepreneurship. The problem is that a lot of people do it blindly like I have in the past. Another problem is that although there are a plethora of self employment ideas many fail.

And they fail for different reasons. In my opinion the main ones are:

1. Lack of sufficient capital
2. Doesn’t solve a problem
3. Not niched focused
4. Dumb idea (yes there are a few out there)
5. Lack of effective marketing
6. Not recession proof
7. Takes too long to turn profit
8. Nothing is systematic, running on autopilot

Let’s briefly look at each failure and see why it happens all to often.

Lack of capital: No longterm capital equals nobody getting paid and the business can’t stay afloat. Enough said right?

Doesn’t solve a major problem: I don’t recall who said it but in order to be successful in business you must solve a problem and do it differently than the next man. So when you are sitting down having a pow wow thinking off all these self employment ideas make sure it solves a huge problem.

Not niched focused: There’s a saying that you get rich in your niche. Too many self employed people don’t drill down and come up with niched focused problem solution oriented businesses. The trend is usually the idea is so broad and they just run with it. BIG mistake.

Dumb Idea:There are some out there. Just be thorough with your brainstorming and research.

Lack of effective marketing: This is a biggie. For some odd reason self employed people think all they have to do is get a website and throw it up and people will come to them. Or just open up a brick and mortar business, hand out flyers, and they will be rich. WRONG WRONG WRONG. You gotta learn how to attract the right customers to you and that takes strategic marketing. But if you don’t have the capital to pay for this that bring us back to problem #1.

Not Recession Proof: So many brick and mortar small businesses are closing down all over the US because of the recession. Construction has dried up, real estate is down, mom and pop stores are gone, etc. Why? Because when a recession comes people cut back on spending excessively UNLESS you there is a demand and your self employment ideas solve a major problem.

Turning Profit Takes To Long: This just bites. Providing a service or making a sale and then it taking a few days, weeks, or even month to get paid off it is for the birds. How can you expect to pay bills or other business related expenses on time if it takes you forever to get paid?

Nothing Is Systematic: This is a huge one that most self employed people don’t even think about. You see, most people self employed people are masquerading as small business owners. And the truth of the matter is, if you aren’t there working, then you don’t get paid.

I’m going to take a page out of Robert Kiyosaki’s Cash Flow Quadrant book (although I’m not quoting verbatim). If that is going on you don’t have a business you technically have a job where you are the boss. The goal of having a successful sustainable profitable business is to get it to the point where everything is running smoothly on autopilot.

Unfortunately most people, when they sit down and try to come up with “self employment ideas” don’t think about these things that I’ve mentioned.

And to be honest I’m barely scratching the surface with all the thought, legwork, research, etc that goes into being self employed.
